Design

Because our course structure has changed to focusing on the project proposal, I want to improve on the idea which I handed in. I would like to add a playfulness to the project so came up with a few words to describe this kind of idea.

  • Fantasy

  • Joy

  • Magical

  • Childlike

  • Playful

  • Spark

  • Laugh/makes you smile

  • Positive emotion

  • Dream

  • Escape

  • Fairytale

  • Whimsical

  • Quirky

  • Imaginative

  • Creative

  • Surprising.

Originally, I was to focus on weaving techniques, but I would like to combine this with loops, bows, detachable parts, moveable parts, and drawstrings. These could help the garments fit a vast variety of sizes and shapes. Rather than creating an occasion wear piece I think I will create something which can be altered for a variety of occasions as this increases its use and longevity. I could add an opulent feel by taking inspiration from 1920s garments which are relaxed yet glamorous, elegant, and luxurious. But I could also do further research of 17th century garments as it links to fantasy, also looking at medieval, rococo and renaissance for inspiration. Because the project is longer, I have time to produce more, so I am thinking about creating both a tailored and a more relaxed garment. This is because the brands I like incorporate both and I would like to show that I can create both.

During the project proposal tutorials my tutor suggested combining technical materials with the craft techniques to give it a fresh/modern feel. They suggested climbing rope which could be an interesting idea, or even using deadstock/repurposed materials. The interview idea I had originally produce will need to change with the latest ideas. I could join with Charlotte to do research on longevity. I want the garments I make to be interesting and quirky but at the same time have longevity. By researching what people wear I would be able to gain a better understanding about what makes a garment stay in someone's wardrobe for years, whilst other are worn a few times. Do garments have to be minimalist, plain, simple, neutral to stand the test of time? Another thing I need to figure out is how I will incorporate CAD LECTRA into the proposal, as this is an important skill which needs to be shown in some way. Finally, last term I often worried about my illustrative drawings but this year I would like to focus on improving technical drawing instead as I feel this has been neglected.
